Why eat locally grown foods?

Buying direct from local farmers supports the local economy.
When you buy direct from local farmers, your dollars stay within your community, and strengthen the local economy. More than 90¢ of every dollar you spend goes to the farmer, thus preserving farming as a livelihood and farmland.
This is important because as mergers in the food industry have increased, the portion of your food dollar paid to farmers has decreased. Vegetable farmers earn only 21¢ of your dollar; the other 79¢ goes to pay for marketing, distribution, and other costs.

Wellness Positions @ UC San Diego
Want to get more involved in wellness related resources on campus?
UC San Diego offers many different opportunities for students who want to help promote wellness on campus.
Counseling And Psychological Services:
Peer Educators: We believe that student peer education is a strong and important avenue to provide information on topics important and applicable to UCSD students: mental health wellness and women's issues. Peer education provides unique experiences for students to receive training in teaching, presentation, and basic counseling skills. In addition, these students then provide valuable resources and information to the UCSD community through workshop/outreach presentations, group forums, and individual meetings with students.
Wellness Peer Educators: The goal of the Wellness Peer Education program is to educate fellow students about mental health and wellness, reduce stigma and spread awareness of Counseling and Psychological Services on campus.
Women's Peer Educators: The CAPS Women’s Peer Educator Program seeks to promote gender equality by providing education and support to members of the UCSD community. We work within a feminist framework to plan and implement programs that raise awareness around issues that disproportionately affect women in our society.
Student Health Services:
Student Health Advocates: Peer health educators that promote activities that contribute to a healthy campus and enhance the personal health of students.
Wellness Center:

Wellness Intern: We work to promote events hosted by a LiveWell UC San Diego program, as well as events that our wellness partners put on.

Community Supported Agriculture

- Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer.
Here are the basics:
- a farmer offers a certain number of "shares" to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included.
- Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a "membership" or a "subscription") and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.
Advantages for farmers:
- Get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, before their 16 hour days in the field begin
- Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm's cash flow
- Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow
- Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits
- Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
- Usually get to visit the farm at least once a season
- Find that kids typically favor food from "their" farm – even veggies they've never been known to eat
- Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food and learn more about how food is grown

Garden of Eden Organics is just one San Diego CSA farm that drops off at UCSD.
- Pick up at the Great Hall, International House on Thursdays, 11:30am to 1pm
There are many more farms that drop off in La Jolla. Visitwww.localharvest.org for more details on CSA and other local farms.

Freshman 15 Myth!
While gaining the Freshman 15 is POSSIBLE, it's not likely if you make a conscious goal to practice personal responsibility. That means even if you are busy and a hamburger seems fast and easy, realize that there are many other (healthier) options to choose from.
Many times, first year college students will forget to include exercise in their daily routine, which will also increase the likelihood of gaining a few extra LB's.

UC San Diego's dining halls can be a healthy choice as well, contrary to popular belief. Check out our blog on the Housing, Dining, Hospitality Top 10 Foods.
Eating healthy in college is not hard when you utilize your kitchen resources!
